It all started with a man called Cadwallader C. Washburn in 1856. A Milling Company founded by the Illinois Congressman Robert Smith was acquired by Cadwallader in 1957. The milling company leased power rights to mills along the Saint Anthony Falls. It was a good idea for a business, but it wouldn't run itself. With Cadwallder behind the wheel, it began breaking a profit, and in 1866 he decided to start a mill himself. Not just any mill, but the largest mill on the falls, and shortly after in 1874, he built an even bigger one. From this foundation, General Mill was established in 1928. It shot to the top of the market like a rocket. Sponsoring radio shows, television shows, and even cartoons, General Mills entered into the culture. Wheaties became an icon synonymous with athletic triumph. Their cereals won the hearts of children everywhere, and their support of the board game industry brought us Monopoly. Today, General Mills is one of the largest and most trusted food processing companies on the planet.
