Transfer a domain name to a new web host

The information about which website server a domain name will resolve to when requested by an internet user’s browser, is stored as the nameserver settings. Every web hosting company has its own nameservers, which they will provide to you when you set up the web space hosting account. All you need to do is to log in to your domain registrar account, and change the nameserver values to those supplied by your web host.

Changing nameservers rarely has an immediate effect. This nameserver information is stored in thousands of DNS servers right across the web, and it takes a little time for all of these servers to update their directories to show the change you have requested – this process is called propagation. Propagation normally takes around 24 hours, but can be as long as 48 hours in some instances. This does mean that your domain will appear to be unavailable during this period, but because of the distributed nature of the DNS servers all around th internet, if your domain shows as unavailable to one person, it may not to another accessing from a different geographical area. One advantage to hosting your website ith the same company whith whom you registered the domain itself, is that nameserver chnges are usually instantaneous because the necessary redirection happens internally and does not need to be propagated across the web’s DNS servers.

Most domain registration services enable you to directly change all aspects of a domain’s details, particularly the nameervers. If they do not, then you should consider moving your domain to one who does, such as GoDaddy.com GoDaddy gives you complete control over your domain, allowing you to change nameservers or any other aspects of th domain, simply by logging in to your account with a username and password. All of your domains registered with GoDaddy are available to you under the one account for a very straightforward way to keep track of domains, hosting, and your website
