The history of Nabisco dates all the way back to 1792. There was a small bakery in Massachusetts that made "pilot bread", a type of tough biscuit for sailors. They held up well, and didn't taste great, but they were a necessary ingredient to any long voyage. They shortly thereafter transitioned to baking crackers instead, and the business held up with mounting success. The company had a talent for making crackers lighter and tastier than their rivals. Their only limitation was how many crackers they could make in a day. In 1890, Adolphus Green formed the National Biscuit Company, combining many bakeries, including the Pearson & Sons Bakery. With the industrial power of dozens of bakeries, combined with the innate talent of the Pearson & Sons bakery, an incredible business was formed. Within a few years the new company spread across the country, but it lacked the attention of the public. Green looked to the heritage of the business and recognized the need for a new product. It would be a cracker with a new shape, lighter and flakier. It was dubbed the Uneeda Biscuit. The lighthearted name, and superior quality drove the competition out of the market. From there, they went on to other great inventions, such as the Triscuit, the Milk-Bone, Shredded Wheat, Oreos, Ritz crackers, and Honey Maid Graham crackers, and the Nabisco sugar wafer. Today, the National Biscuit Company is known as Nabisco, named after the success of their sugar wafer, and it continues the spirit of the Pearson & Sons bakery with ever new and better baked products.
