Chemistry? Yeah! Chemistry

October 5, 2009 – 1:11 pm

Remember the scene from the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls where Sky and Sarah first meet? She sings about imagining her love as a solid, upstanding gentleman. She was obviously looking for compatibility. Sky, on the other hand, says he’ll leave it up to chemistry. Of course, both aspects end up playing a role in their eventual relationship.

That’s the idea behind Chemistry.com, the popular sister site to Match.com. Chemistry.com was founded on the belief that meaningful relationships are built on the two equally important foundations of compatibility and chemistry. Other sites may help you find out if you’re compatible, but Chemistry’s site is designed to help you find both of these elements.

Chemistry’s Chief Scientific Advisor is Dr. Helen Fisher, a world-renowned biological anthropologist and author. She has spent the last three decades researching the science of human attraction, and that’s why Chemistry recruited her to develop their personality profile.

After completing the personality profile to determine what ignites your chemistry, they’ll offer you up to 5 potential matches per day, and also notify you when another member is interested in getting to know you. You can then get to know your matches through a step-by-step introduction process called “1-2-3 MEET” where you select the questions and control the pace. Then, when you’re both ready, Chemistry will help you set up your first date.

You’re in control of the process from the very beginning and every step along the way, only revealing photos or other personal information when you feel comfortable doing so.

Find that person you’re made to have lasting chemistry with at Chemistry.com. You’ll save 25% off your membership with our Chemistry.com discount. Why not sign up today?

Add full drag and drop control and rapid on site editing, and you’ve got a single platform with infinite possibilities.

Enjoy A True Designer Look

Squarespace sites come with more than 60 style variants from professional brand name designers. Every style allows point and click control over every single element of the design. Since the style of the site is independent from the content you create, you can change styles without breaking anything. You can even design your own themes with a few clicks and see the changes in real time on your site. Top navigation variants, menus, columns on the page – arrange it all to your heart’s content.

Hybrids In Your Mirror May Be Closer Than You Think

October 2, 2009 – 12:45 pm

fusionThough gasoline prices have moderated somewhat in recent months from the $4 and upwards that we saw awhile back, the long term trend is still toward ever increasing costs. Given that and the advance of technology, many people are turning to gas/electric hybrids to reduce expenses, not to mention their environmental impact.

Hybrids may seem like the new kid on the block, but it was over a century ago that Ferdinand Porsche produced the first gas/electric car, and the first U.S. patent for a gas/electric hybrid was filed by H. Piper in 1905. Although plug-in hybrids are in the works, the current crop of hybrids use technology called “regenerative braking” to capture energy that would normally be lost when the vehicle is slowing down in order to recharge the batteries. Today’s hybrids are as convenient, as powerful and as reasonably priced as their fully gas-powered brethren.

Those who drive hybrid vehicles do so for many reasons. There is the practical aspect of fuel savings, as well as the more social aspects of being on the front edge of technological advancement and reducing pollution and one’s carbon footprint. If you own a hybrid, chances are you’re proud of it, perhaps even a bit fanatical about it. So what do you do when it’s time to book a rental car?

Fortunately, rental car companies have responded to increased consumer demand for fuel efficiency by offering vehicles with better mileage and lower emissions, including hybrids. Hertz brought several thousand Toyota Prius hybrids into its fleet in 2007. Avis and Budget followed suit with the Prius and the Nissan Altima hybrids, and the nation’s largest rental car company, Enterprise, offers some 5000 hybrids from Toyota and Ford. They also offer the opportunity to pay an extra $1.25 on each rental to help offset carbon emissions, with funds going to Terra Pass.

Although there are typically increased rental fees of around $5 to $15 for renting a hybrid as compared to an equivalent conventional car, there are also savings when it comes time to fuel up before return, and many customers prefer to rent a vehicle that reflects their values and style despite any increased cost. Whether you’re a hybrid owner yourself, cost conscious at the pump, a committed environmentalist or you just want to try out the technology on your next rental, rental car firms are responding with an ever increasing number and variety of hybrids at your service.

Remember that whatever your vehicle needs, you can save when you book your next vehicle online with our Discount Car Rentals from top firms Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise and Thrifty.

Protect Your Family From Carbon Monoxide

October 2, 2009 – 11:41 am

carbon-monoxideAs home heating season approaches in the Northern Hemisphere, so do the dangers of improperly operating heating systems. A blocked flue or cracked heat exchanger can mean poisonous carbon monoxide going into the living space. Here’s what you need to know to keep your family safe.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless and odorless gas, and therefore often goes unnoticed until it is too late. At high levels it can cause death in minutes. It is produced whenever any fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood, or even charcoal is burned. When appliances and heating systems are maintained and used properly, CO is vented properly to where concentrations aren’t high enough to harm you or your family, but when they are not working properly or are used incorrectly, dangerous levels of can result. Hundreds of deaths occur each year from carbon monoxide poisoning resulting from poorly maintained or improperly used fuel-burning appliances or furnaces.

Symptoms of CO poisoning include headaches, dizziness, confusion, disorientation, fainting and nausea. Symptoms can be milder with low levels of exposure. Prolonged low level exposure can cause serious health problems as well, and since some of the symptoms are similar to the flu or other ailments, they may not be recognized as the result of CO poisoning.

Here are some preventive measures.

Have all of your fuel-burning appliances inspected by a trained professional at least once a year at the beginning of every heating season. You’ll also want to be certain that the flues and chimneys are connected peoperly, in good working condition, and without obstruction.

Be sure to read and follow the instructions for any fuel-burning device. If possible, choose only appliances that vent to the outside, but if you can’t avoid using an unvented gas or kerosene space heater, it is critical to follow all of the precautions that accompany the device, including proper fueling and ventilation procedures.

Don’t use a gas oven to heat your home, and never burn charcoal indoors.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, CO detectors are a good secondary precaution as well. Carefully follow directions on placement and use of detectors, and only use them as a supplement, not a replacement, for proper inspection, maintenance and use of your fuel burning appliances and systems.

Here are some more tips for the home heating season from the experts at Angie’s List. If you need to find a qualified contractor to help with inspection and maintenance of your heating system, our Angie’s List Coupon will save you 25% on your membership.

Go Daddy To Sponsor NASCAR’s Mark Martin

October 1, 2009 – 12:42 pm

mark_martin_car

NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader Mark Martin will drive for Hendrick Motorsports through 2011, and GoDaddy.com has signed to be primary sponsor of his nunber 5 car Chevrolets in the Series. The world’s leading registrar of Internet domain names will be on the hood for 20 races next year, including the Daytona 500.

Although Martin admits that 2011 is a long-term commitment in NASCAR, he says the sponsorship opportunity from GoDaddy made the decision to stick with Hendrick an easy one. “That shouldn’t come as any big surprise,” Martin said of the contract extension. “Who would want to quit?”

Martin had initially committed to just one full season in the number 5 car, with an option to run at least a partial schedule again next year. After a win in April at Phoenix (his first victory since 2005) and subsequent wins at Darlington, Michigan and Chicago this year, the team seems like a natural fit.

The sponsorship deal from GoDaddy is the first hint of a new primary sponsor in recent months for NASCAR’s top cup series. The economy has limited many companies’ marketing budgets, with several companies scaling back or leaving sports sponsorships entirely. GoDaddy has also been involved in NASCAR in the Nationwide Series, and in IndyCar as a secondary sponsor for GoDaddy Girl Danica Patrick for several years, but sponsoring a high-profile Sprint Cup contender such as Martin’s number 5 car team is a major step for GoDaddy that will provide a great deal more exposure.

Martin, who at 50 years old is considered by some to be the dean of active drivers, went into semi-retirement in 2006, so his success this year is a phenomenon. Martin says “As long as I can have fun, compete at a high level and have the opportunity to win, I’m going to continue to do this. I’m having a blast.”

“GoDaddy.com is an exciting, aggressive partner with immense marketing savvy,” says Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “The fact that they’re again expanding their relationship with us says a lot about the success of their business and the results they’ve seen from these programs.”

Congratulations to Mark Martin, Hendrick Motorsports, GoDaddy.com and all involved, and best of luck in the Cup chase!

A First Aid Kit For Your Dog

October 1, 2009 – 10:28 am

first_aidIf you have children in your household, or even if not, you probably keep a variety of first aid supplies on hand – bandages, salves, etc. Yet, oddly, many dog owners haven’t given much thought to what they might need to provide first aid to their beloved pet.

If the need arises, it helps to be prepared ahead of time and to have a few basic supplies at the ready. Not surprisingly, many of the emergencies that a dog might face are similar to those of their humans. Some of the supplies you might need may already be in your medicine cabinet or first aid kit, such as hydrogen peroxide or other antiseptic for cleaning wounds, sterile gauze rolls or pads, cotton squares, round-tip scissors, tweezers, etc. Depending on the size of your dog, regular bandage tape may work, or you might check out the elastic pet wrap tape available at online pet supply stores like PETCO.com. You’ll also want some antibiotic or healing salve, topical antihistamine for wasp or bee stings, and eye wash of some sort. In case of an injury involving bleeding, in addition to gauze and steri-pads, there are some excellent topical clotting products available as well. Many of these items are produced in special formulations for dogs that make them easier to apply when needed.

An instant pet thermometer is one of the handiest items, allowing you to check temperature with a quick dip into your pet’s ear. Also, syringes for dispensing both liquid medications and pills when needed are helpful.

One of the most essential items to have on hand is an old, clean blanket for wrapping up a dog that is in shock.

Keep in mind that your dong may be frightened if injured, and may be more likely to struggle or even bite. It might be a good idea to keep a muzzle in your doggie first aid kit in case of this eventuality.

Obviously, your veterinarian or pet emergency center (if there’s one in your area) are the best resources for treatment and advice if your dog gets into trouble. Keep their phone numbers with your kit, or somewhere you can find them quickly in an emergency. It’s also a good idea to learn the basics of first aid for your pet. PETCO offers courses in pet first aid online at reasonable prices – and 9 of 10 pet owners who have taken their course would recommend it to others.

A little preparation ahead of time can help you and your pet get through an emergency more successfully, and might even save your dog’s life. Taking time to gather the items and gain the knowledge and skills to handle a crisis is an important investment in the health and happiness of your dog.

Remember that you can save 10% off your next order of supplies for your pet with our PETCO Coupons.

Celebrating Halloween On A Budget

September 30, 2009 – 12:14 pm

snap apple partyLast year Americans spent an estimated $6.9 billion on Halloween, making it the country’s second largest commercial holiday, but the National Retail Federation released a survey this week saying that consumers intend to spend less in 2009 because of economic conditions, with total spending expected to reach only $4.75 billion. On average, the 2009 Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey shows that consumers plan to spend about $10 less for this year’s holiday over last year.

Over 60% of those surveyed do still plan to celebrate Halloween 2009, but more are planning to create their own costumes and most are planning to spend less on candy and decorations. Still, more than 4 out of 5 costumes worn this year will be purchased rather than homemade.

Young adults aged 18 – 24 who usually spend the most for Halloween festivities plan to curtail the most this year, spending an average of around $68 (as compared to $86 last year).

National Retail Federation president and CEO Tracy Mullin indicated that since retailers know that Americans will be looking to celebrate on a budget, they will be offering creative costume and decorating ideas in every price point imaginable. “The economy has caught up to Halloween this year,” said Mullin.

If you’re celebrating on a budget this year, take some advice from the friendly ghosts at MEVIO. eHarmony Says “Don’t Be A Creep!”

September 30, 2009 – 10:51 am

bugsyThere’s one in every crowd. You know him. That guy who’s always pushing just a little too hard, or moving just a little too quickly, or getting just a little too close for comfort. Trouble is, everyone seems to recognize it but him.

eHarmony has put together a list of some typical creepy behavior that some men may not be aware of to help them steer clear of “the creep zone.” Here’s a quick summary of their main points.

1) Don’t mention anything overtly sexual early on. eHarmony points out that a man who mentions sex at any point during the first 10 conversations is likely to be considered a creep by most women. Whether or not sex is your only agenda, it will appear to be so if you bring up the subject before you know each other really well.

2) Confident guys send a message and wait for an answer. Creeps aggressively or obsessively continue to make contact. Over and over. And over. Don’t do it.

3) Read her lips – along with her other facial expressions, body language, etc. If a woman isn’t making eye contact with you, then staring her down is a bad idea. Your persistence and sheer animal magnetism won’t cause her to meet your gaze and fall under your spell. It will, however, set off every creep alarm in her being.

4) Don’t be (too) weird. According to eHarmony staff, “Most women are looking for a relationship with someone they perceive to be normal – perhaps a little quirky, but not odd or strange.” Your prized collection of baseball cards or antique razor strops probably fall within the mainstream of typical male hobbies. Unless you are an occularist, however, museum cases filled with prosthetic eyeballs probably do not. Maybe best not to make them a major topic of conversation until you know each other better. You may be perfectly normal, but you’re likely to seem less than so if your pastimes and hobbies are too far out on the fringe.

5) Measure out two feet. Study that distance. Learn it, know it, and stay that far away from her. Seriously. Invasion of personal space without an invitation is a serious breach of etiquette, whether on a date or not. Keep a safe distance until she gives you a sign that she wants you closer.

You can read the full article on avoiding creepy behavior at eHarmony’s advice center.

And if you’re looking for someone compatible, why not put eHarmony’s vast resources to work in your quest? You’ll save 15% on a four month subscription with our eHarmony Promotional Code.

By the way, that guy up at the top? Bugsy. Looks creepy, doesn’t he?

No More Smoking In Some Rental Cars

September 29, 2009 – 12:10 pm

no_smokingWe’re all aware by now of the dangers of second hand and even third hand smoke. As more nonsmokers and people with sensitivity to tobacco products insist on non-smoking environments, more and more restrictions are placed on where smokers can light up.

Come October 1st, Avis and Budget will become the first major rental-car companies to completely ban smoking throughout their entire North American fleets. Cars will undergo an inspection upon return and customers who ignore the ban and smoke in the vehicles will face a cleaning fee of up to $250.

John Barrows, spokesman of the Avis Budget Group, indicates that the number 1 request they get is for a smoke-free car, and one of the most common customer complaints is that a car smells of smoke. He also mentioned that cleaning a smoky car increases the cost of operation, because the vehicles have to be taken out of service longer. The new smoking ban is meant to address all three concerns.

Smoking bans or restrictions have spread across various modes of transportation in recent decades, beginning with the first ban on smoking during short domestic flights imposed by Congress in 1988, and expanded in 1990 to flights of up to six hours. That same year, smoking on interstate buses was also prohibited. Restrictions and bans on smoking came to Amtrak in 1994. Although other car rental companies have taken more limited steps to address concerns related to smoking in their vehicles, Avis and Budget are the first to impose a fleet-wide ban.

According to a study released last month by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, tobacco smoke residue is significantly more concentrated in cars than it is in bars, restaurants and other public places. Based on customer research, Budget and Avis expect to gain more business than they lose by imposing the ban, thus helping their bottom line in tough economic times.

Whether you’re a smoker or not, you’ll find a vehicle rental to meet your needs at considerable savings in the Discount Car Rentals section of our site. Choose from top rental firms including Avis, Budget, Dollar and Thrifty.
