In 1947, a swiss drug company developed a new shampoo specially formulated to include Vitamin B5 to improve the shine and texture of hair. Vitamin B5 was originally used to treat burns on soldiers during World War 2. It aided the regeneration of skin, and helped the burns heal. In 1947, Dr. Gustav Erlemann discovered that the hair surrounding the burn injuries was stronger than hair elsewhere. From his research he formulated a new hair tonic that he called Pantene. At first, it was primarily sold only in the highest end beauty stores throughout Europe until 1983 when the award winning product was purchased by Richardson-Vicks. The product, long kept secret within Europe, began being sold to department stores in the United States.
